Gifts (Underneath the Christmas Tree) - Original Song

I wrote this song for my wife last Christmas. She had just completed treatment for thyroid cancer, and I felt thankful for every minute.

Words:

Morning comes, and I rub my eyes
Bits of my dream still drifting by
The kids are quiet, the house is still still
And you lie beside me, dreaming

I put my slippers on, it’s still cold in here
All is quiet, there’s nothing to fear
I lean over, pass my hand through your hair
And I listen to you breathing

CHORUS
My love, put your gifts underneath our Christmas tree
But the only gift that I need is you here with me.

We’ve been together now over twenty years
Some filled with laughter, others with tears
We said forever, but none of us know
How long we get for breathing

I work my corporate job to keep the kids in shoes
You wrangle kids like the other moms do
Sometimes I wonder, where’d the kids we were go
Then you laugh, and I remember.

CHORUS

The day is over now and I’m feeling beat
You read your book and I’m half asleep
It isn’t easy knowing what to do
Every day as we grow older.

But I remember now how you brushed your hair
How I kissed you as we went up the stairs
It’s twenty years and the love is still there
And it never has stopped growing

CHORUS

Morning comes, and I rub my eyes …

Duration : 0:4:2
